Women’s Bowling kicks off second season with historic weekend
Kicking off their second season making program history, Governors State University’s (GovState) women’s bowling team finished their first 2024-25 tournament at the end of September.
“WOW! What a weekend!” said GovState Head Women’s Bowling Coach Melanie McDaniel. “First time in program history that the team makes Bracket Play. First time we have a JV (junior varsity) compete and they are in the Championship Match!”
Both the varsity and junior varsity (JV) teams competed, making strides not yet seen in GovState bowling.
Varsity qualified into the bracket play in fourth place behind Saint Xavier, Judson University, and Calumet College of St. Joseph, who were first, second, and third, respectively.
Falling short of a win in the first match of bracket play, varsity finished a record high of fourth place.
“These girls worked so hard, and with only one of the six girls on varsity this weekend being a returning player – we have such a young team who are going out there, putting their all in and learning how to compete together,” said Coach McDaniel.
“I couldn’t be more proud of how they held their heads high at the end of the day! This team is showing a lot of strength with a long season ahead of us!”
For JV’s first time competing, they put in the work to qualify second in the finals behind Judson University. The team went back and forth with Judson University, winning match two, but eventually fell to their opponent.
“These ladies worked great together as a team all weekend! They are working hard and look forward to their next event,” said Coach McDaniel.
