Welcome back to Governors State University – stay safe, stay connected
By Christopher Goodson, Emergency Management Coordinator, Guest Writer
As Governors State University (GovState) kicks off a new semester, we extend a warm welcome to all our students, faculty, and staff. Whether you are returning to familiar faces or experiencing GovState for the very first time, this is a time for new opportunities, renewed energy, and community connection.
Along with the excitement of a fresh academic year comes the important reminder that safety and preparedness are shared responsibilities. To ensure the university community can communicate quickly and effectively in the event of an emergency, GovState relies on two critical tools: updated contact information and the GovState Campus Alerts system.
GovState Campus Alerts – Are You Connected?
In an emergency, timing is everything. GovState Campus Alerts provide critical updates through multiple platforms including email, text messages, University social media pages and the University website.
By keeping your contact details up to date, you ensure that no matter where you are, you’ll receive important information when you need it most.
Why Updating Your Information Matters
One of the simplest yet most important steps you can take is confirming your emergency contact information in the myGSU Portal. Accurate information helps ensure you can be reached immediately in urgent situations.
Students: Log in to the myGSU portal to update your emergency contact details. Your information is stored securely in our database and is accessible only to GovState’s first responders in times of emergency. Updating takes less than 10 minutes, and a tutorial is available to walk you through the process.
Faculty and Staff: Log in to the myGSU portal. Under Online Services, select Employees, then Employee Profile → Emergency Information. Add or edit your contacts, confirm your changes, and look for the notification confirming your update. A step-by-step tutorial is also available.
Preparedness is more than just technology; it’s a commitment to caring for one another. By keeping your information current, you’re helping strengthen GovState’s culture of safety and responsibility.
So as you dive into classes, activities, and new opportunities this semester, take a moment to double-check your emergency information. It’s a small step with a big impact. Together, we can ensure that the GovState community is informed, connected, and ready for anything.
Welcome back, and here’s to a safe and successful semester!
