Victoria Sweeney: Filling a gap

After earning her bachelor's degree in music, Victoria Sweeney realized she enjoyed research and writing, which led her to Governors State University's (GovState) Communication, Media, and Performance program. She found that the master's degree filled a gap for herself that she didn't know existed.
Victoria currently works with the University's Career Services Office, where she anticipates her degree will boost her ability to serve the campus community.
GovState Newsroom: What attracted you to GovState?
Victoria: How close it is to home! I live close by so it’s nice to have a university in my backyard.
GovState Newsroom: What’s your degree and why did you choose it?
Victoria: My degree is a Masters in Communication, Media, and Performance. I chose it because I realized how much I liked to write. Had I not majored in music in undergrad, I would have gone into communication.
GovState Newsroom: What clubs and/or activities were you involved with? Any memories stick out with one of them?
Victoria: I am involved with Career Services since that is where I work. I’ve worked here for five years, starting in Procurement and ending up as the office manager in Career Services where I work more behind the scenes and with the logistics in the department. I also help a lot with the planning and marketing of the events we hold. We put on events and activities that are really enjoyable and have helped me reach out and connect with other students, faculty, staff.
GovState Newsroom: What are your dreams for your degree?
Victoria: My dreams for my degree are really to put it to use in everyday life and use it to improve how I communicate with others. It’s a small thing to think about, but it can have a huge impact on how to approach family and friends.
I can see my degree being a benefit since it has helped me develop a better eye for detail for events and projects that the department (Career Services) organizes. Also, learning a lot of the communication theories has helped me better understand a lot of interactions between everyone involved with the department.
GovState Newsroom: What goal have you achieved that felt really far away your first semester at GovState?
Victoria: Actually being able to give presentations without feeling as nervous as I used to! During my undergrad I had to do presentations along with musical performances since I was a music major and my nerves were through the roof. Doing this has greatly helped me become so much more confident that I was.
GovState Newsroom: How are you celebrating your graduation?
Victoria: Going out to a super nice restaurant and possibly taking a trip!
