Students receive ALAS scholarships
Students in Governors State University’s (GSU) Association of Latin America Students (ALAS) were recently awarded ALAS 2022 scholarships. ALAS is an inclusive, student-run organization that promotes Latin American culture on campus. Their goal is to spread awareness of Latinx culture and celebrate Latinx Heritage Month through engaging educational programs, lectures featuring community leaders, and special events.
As members of ALAS, the recipients were chosen for their active participation and for being committed to serving as ALAS brand ambassadors. This included attending events during the semester they were awarded the scholarship to ensure club growth and exposure.
María Orozco, a communications major with a concentration in public relations and advertising, was born and raised in Mexico until she was four before moving to the far Southeast side of Chicago. She wants to be a liaison for the Latinx community and hopes to achieve that by working in marketing, advertising, and public relations.
“The ALAS co-advisors and executive board have been incredibly supportive by providing a space to connect with other students and my Latinidad, and find financial resources like the ALAS scholarship. The ALAS scholarship relieved some financial burden, allowing me to focus on my studies and my goal of finally becoming the first in my family to graduate college.” said Orozco. “GSU does a great job of looking after their students, whether that’s through providing academic resources or creating a sense of community.”
Another scholarship recipient, John Ruiz, also had positive things to say about his experience with ALAS. “ALAS has helped me find my sense of belonging at Governors State University. It helped me grow academically and professionally.”
The complete list of ALAS scholarship recipients are as follows: Andres Cornejo, Antonia Guajardo, Edith Martinez, Luis Martinez, Maria Orozco, Jesus Perez, Brenda Reyes, Tricia Romero, and John Ruiz.
