Staying safe on campus: Outdoor edition
By Christopher Goodson, Emergency Management Coordinator, Guest Writer
Governors State University (GovState) is proud to offer a vast campus encompassing 750 acres, featuring walking trails, a sculpture park, and a convenient walking path from the Metra station to the campus. As Jaguars return for the start of the fall semester and enjoy these outdoor spaces, the safety and well-being of the community remains paramount.
Here are some safety guidelines for GovState’s campus.
| Drivers | Pedestrians |
| Follow the posted speed limit | Use designated sidewalks, crosswalks, and paths |
| Give pedestrians the right of way | Remain vigilant of vehicles and wild animals |
| Limit distracted driving | Be aware of mile markers on trails |
| Park in well-lit places | Be aware of the location of the DPS Emergency call boxes. They are located outside every exterior door on campus, in front of every parking lot on campus closest to the building, and along the alumni walking path. |
Be Aware of Surroundings: Whether on the walking trails, in the sculpture park, or on the path from the Metra, always stay alert and be aware of the surrounding area. Avoid distractions such as using a phone excessively.
Travel in Groups: Whenever possible, walk with friends or colleagues, especially during evening hours. There is safety in numbers.
Report Suspicious Activity: If something seems out of the ordinary or suspicious, do not hesitate to report it to campus security. Vigilance can help keep the community safe.
Use Well-Lit Paths: Stick to well-lit paths and areas when walking at night. Avoid shortcuts through less illuminated areas.
Emergency Contact Information: Save the campus security phone number for quick access in case of emergencies, 708.534.4900 or x4900 on any internal campus line.
Stay Informed: Make sure personal contact information is up to date, so notifications about any safety issues or emergencies on campus are received. Click here to learn how to update contact information online in the myGSU portal.
Following these guidelines and looking out for others can ensure that GovState’s campus remains a safe and enjoyable place for all. Remember, "If you see something, say something." Proactive actions can make a significant difference in maintaining the safety of GovState’s beautiful and expansive campus.
