Soccer doubleheader celebrates GovState’s new stadium on October 17

President Ester to take the field for a special "Presidential Goal Kick" on Oct. 17

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UNIVERSITY PARK, Illinois – Governors State University (GovState) will celebrate its new state-of-the-art soccer stadium with a free community tailgate and Men's and Women's Soccer doubleheader on Saturday, Oct. 17. Students, alumni, families, and neighbors are invited to join President Ester and the GovState community for a day of Jaguar spirit.

The new soccer facility gives GovState soccer programs a premier on-campus venue to compete and train. Previously, GovState players practiced and hosted games off campus in Crown Point, Indiana.

About the Stadium

The stadium features a state-of-the-art playing surface with Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) rated turf. The completed complex will include covered player benches, stands, restrooms, locker rooms, and seating for up to 400 fans. The facility enhances GovState's athletic programs and contributes to the growth and development of the campus.

Event Details:

  • Date: Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026
  • Tailgate: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Men's Soccer: 12 p.m.
  • Presidential Goal Kick: Before the 3 p.m. match begins (estimated between 2:30 and 3p.m.), President Ester will take the field.
  • Women's Soccer: 3 p.m.
  • Location: New Soccer Stadium on GovState campus (adjacent to the Prairie Place Residence Hall)
  • Admission: The tailgate is free and everyone is welcome

Guests can enjoy the game-day atmosphere, play games, win prizes, and celebrate with President Ester and the GovState community.

*Note: Open grills and outside alcohol will not be permitted.

Supporting Jaguar Athletics

All proceeds from meal and drink ticket sales will benefit the GovState Athletic Boosters, which supports student-athletes. Donations are welcome.

The GovState Men’s Soccer team has qualified for the CCAC postseason tournament for seven consecutive seasons, while last season Women’s Soccer led all Jaguar programs academically, with eight student‑athletes named to All‑CCAC academic honor squads.
