Governors State University’s (GovState) School of Extended Learning (SXL) received the Dollar General Adult Literacy grant, an award given to an organization that provides direct services to adults in need of literacy assistance in specific areas.
Committed to expanding access to education and workforce opportunities, SXL plans to use the $10,000 grant to offer beginner level ESL (English as a Second Language) classes for adults in Illinois.
There are currently 32 adults enrolled in SXL's Dollar General grant-funded virtual ESL program, exceeding their annual target of 30 students.
The virtual program spans 22 weeks, with 11 taking place in the fall and the other 11 in the spring. The course includes free books, as well as pre- and post-tests to check improvement to build English language skills and confidence.
Eligibility Requirements:
Live in Illinois
Unemployed or underemployed
Have access to internet/Zoom
In addition to the course, eight school district partners are offering ESL and basic computer skills programs, reaching more than 120 adults throughout their district.
Together, these initiatives are helping adult learners strengthen essential skills, increase confidence, and create new opportunities for success in their families, workplaces, and communities.
