Portrait exhibit coming to GovState Visual Arts Gallery
Starting October 9, the exhibit “Portraying Women” will be on display in Governors State University's (GovState) Visual Arts Gallery, showcasing the work of four diverse artists who bring their own techniques and materials to explore the female face, form, and psyche through portraiture.
Through November 15, gallery guests can expect art from Jeffrey Equality Brooks, Monica Brown, Faith Humphrey Hill, and Jesse Howard, as well as a chance to see the artists in person at the artists’ reception on Thursday, October 10, 2024, from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. with remarks at 4:30 p.m.
Pushing the boundaries of mixed media, Jeffrey Equality Brooks creates highly intricate portraits through the combination of automotive paints, metal flakes, gold leaf, resin, and broken glass.
Delving into memory, personal mythology, and the weight of generational narratives in her portraits, Monica Brown draws inspiration from matrilineal stories, exploring the concept of genetic memory and healing.
By blending traditional knitting with digital drawing to symbolize the interconnectedness of people, Faith Humphrey Hill’s portraits present a soft yet edgy exploration of identity.
With charcoal, watercolor, and collage, Jesse Howard creates figures that appear stylized while capturing the emotional and societal pressures that shape his subjects.
Through each of their individual takes on art, the artists depict distinct visions of womanhood, identity, and transformation.
