Graduate Profile: Laila Atra-Yassin
Laila Atra-Yassin could not have anticipated the opportunities she would have when she transferred to Governors State University (GovState) through the Dual Degree Program (DDP).
Enrolling in the Psychology program and minoring in ethics, Laila set out to achieve her goal of becoming an occupational therapist and found herself going above and beyond that goal. The atmosphere at GovState motivated Laila to take every chance she could, leading her to get involved with the GovState Honors College, community service events and leadership courses, even being named the 2023 Lincoln Laureate. And she's not done yet.
This fall, Laila will start the Occupational Therapy master's program at GovState, though for now, she's looking forward to walking the Commencement stage this spring.
GovState Newsroom: What attracted you to Governors State University?
Laila: The first thing that attracted me the most to GovState was how close it is to my home, but as I got into the university it was seeing how diverse and inclusive the university is. I love that there is a sense of community here and it was easy to meet new people.
GovState Newsroom: What clubs and/or activities were you involved with?
Laila: I am a member of the Dual Degree Program, GovState Honors College, Psi Chi Honor Society, National Society of Leadership and Success, the President of Tau Sigma Honor Society, and the Secretary of Students for Justice in Palestine.
GovState Newsroom: What song will always remind you of this time in your life?
Laila: As a nontraditional student, my college journey is not like that of a traditional student. I started college much later in life, and I can say that other nontraditional students may agree that the song that will remind us of our college time is “I Did It My Way” by Frank Sinatra.
GovState Newsroom: What are your dreams for your degree?
Laila: As I graduate with my undergraduate degree my dream is still incomplete. I am registered to start my master's degree in occupational therapy here at GovState in the fall. My dream is to have the opportunity to help children with special needs meet their full potential and to work alongside their caregivers to ensure they are part of that journey with their child.
GovState Newsroom: What advice would you give to current and/or future GovState students?
Laila: My advice to current/new students would be to find your passion and discover what ignites your enthusiasm and fuels your drive. Whatever it is, passion is the catalyst for hard work and dedication. Seek out opportunities. Actively look for ways to make a difference, whether through volunteer work, internships, or campus initiatives. Any and every small effort adds up and contributes to positive change.
Also, remember to always stay committed. Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but your commitment to your goals and values will guide you through those hard times. Finally, please pay it forward. As you achieve success and grow, remember to give back to your community and the university. Help support others on their journey through mentorship, guidance, and support; doing this will create cycles of positive impacts that transcend individual achievements. When you embrace these principles you leave a legacy that extends far beyond your college years.
