Plant Ecology Expert

Dr. Mary Carrington is a Professor of Biology at GSU and Interim Chair in the Division of Science, Mathematics and Technology. She has a diverse educational and scholarship background, with a B.S. degree in Forestry and Wildlife, an M.S. degree in Wildlife Biology and a Ph.D. in Botany.

As an expert in plant ecology, Dr. Carrington is fascinated by the natural world and interested in how things work. Her extensive research in plant ecology, fire ecology and conservation science has provided her the opportunity to follow her interests. Most of her current research is conducted in tallgrass prairies and restoring tallgrass prairie to Illinois, addressing how the prairie works as an ecosystem. She is also passionate about climate change, carbon sequestration and renewable energy.

Community service plays a vital role in Dr. Carrington’s understanding and promoting conservation of natural areas, as demonstrated by her service on the board of directors of the Land Conservancy of Will County. The not-for-profit organization aims to preserve, protect and enhance natural environments which complements the central theme in her prairie restoration work.
