Equity in Education Expert

Dr. Marlon Cummings is an Assistant Professor of Education and Director of the Interdisciplinary Leadership Doctorate Program. He completed a bachelor’s degree in Biological Engineering and a master’s degree in Public Administration before earning his Ph.D. in Urban Education Policy and Organizational Leadership.

Before joining the faculty at Governors State, Dr. Cummings held a variety of positions ranging from middle school teacher, to director for youth-based programming, to principal consultant. While working on his doctorate degree, he taught at Chicago’s Concordia University and worked to promote equity in public education policy in Illinois. His career success is mirrored in the research he performs on organizational leadership development, culturally responsive pedagogy, urban schools, urban teacher preparation, school reform and educational policy reform.

Dr. Cummings is passionate about equity in education opportunity as evidenced by his most recent publication on the “importance and potential of community partnerships in urban schools in an era of high stakes accountability.” He strives to develop methods of instruction that ensures each student is reached and can be successful.
