Dr. Marlon Cummings, Associate Professor and Chair of the Division of Education and Leadership, will deliver the keynote address at Governors State University’s (GovState) 2024 Commencement ceremonies, promising a message on legacy.

“It is truly an honor to be asked to deliver the commencement speech for the 2024 ceremonies,” said Cummings. “I do not take lightly the responsibility of offering words of advice and encouragement to the newest Jaguar alumni.”

With a passion for community building, teaching, and advocating for equity in education that spans over 20 years, Cummings has made it his goal to use his career to help others.

In his role at GovState, Cummings supports eight departments of faculty dedicated to developing aspiring educators and educational leaders. Previously, he has served as president of Faculty Senate and a member of the Illinois Board of Higher Education Strategic Planning committee for Illinois’ 10-year master plan for higher education.

Cummings also has experience in civic engagement, having served two terms as the Community Representative on his Local School Council and over 10 years on Youth Guidance’s Junior Board, a non-profit that provides programming for underserved populations and schools.

“While I am confident there are other more deserving than me for this honor, I do believe my message on legacy will resonate with the students, and so I’m thankful to be able to share it with them,” said Cummings.
