Lt. Gov. Stratton to visit GSU Feb. 24 to promote Southland Stroke Bill

-       MEDIA ALERT -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELASE

UNIVERSITY PARK, IL - On Friday, February 24, 2023, Governors State University (GSU) will host Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton during Black History Month to recognize the university’s partnership with the state to promote stroke prevention and awareness.

Who: Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton, State Rep. Debbie Meyers-Martin, GSU President Dr. Cheryl Green

What: Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton will join other state and university officials to issue a state proclamation that establishes a partnership between GSU’s College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) and the Illinois Department of Public Health. The Southland Stroke Prevention and Awareness bill creates an educational campaign tailored to communities at high-risk for stroke.

Why: Research has shown that African Americans are at twice the risk as whites for experiencing a first stroke and have the highest rate of death due to stroke.

State Rep. Debbie Meyers-Martin, who sponsored the bill, was supported in the effort by CHHS Director of Community Outreach, Program Development and Academic Support, Dr. Tonya Roberson. Roberson also works with The Far South Chicago Coalition – Quality of Life.

“We must begin to address these disparities with education. GSU is instrumental in this campaign because of the inspiration I received from Dr. Tonya Roberson and the College of Health and Human services that provided the information I needed to create the legislation we will recognize on February 24th,’’ said Meyers-Martin.

The ceremony, timed to highlight the CHHS Black History Month event, will include remarks from Stratton, GSU President Cheryl Green, Representative Meyers-Martin, Dr. Roberson, and Health care Leader Dr. Knitasha Washington.  Following the ceremony, visitors and the GSU community can browse informational tables highlighting health and social justice issues.

When: Friday, February 24, 2023, Governors State University (GSU) at 9 a.m.

Where: This is an invitation-only event, which will be live-streamed starting at 9 a.m. from the Hall of Governors at Governors State University. Informational tables will be open for visiting before and after the ceremony.
