Balancing a busy work schedule and master’s degree studies can be difficult, yet Liliana Cortes managed it all and remained committed to the Counseling program at Governors State University (GovState). Throughout her courses, Liliana actively sought out ways to expand her knowledge and skills.
She’s looking forward to exploring her passion further at GovState when she starts her doctorate program in the fall. Until then, Liliana is excited to spend time with friends she hasn’t seen in a while.
GovState Newsroom: What attracted you to GovState?
Liliana: I truly appreciate the diversity that GovState brings, both among the students and the teaching staff. It’s heartening to see such varied backgrounds represented in our classrooms, and I believe this enriches our discussions, leading to transformative and enlightening conversations.
GovState Newsroom: What’s your degree and why did you choose it?
Liliana: I’m graduating with a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health because I've always felt a deep calling to support those who may be feeling “broken” or weighed down by life's challenges. My goal is to offer them compassionate guidance and practical tools to help them rediscover their strength and regain control over their lives.
GovState Newsroom: What are your dreams for your degree?
Liliana: I’m excited to share that I’ll be starting my Ph.D. program this fall at GovState! My dream is to open my own private practice where I can support kids and individuals from lower-income backgrounds. I’m really passionate about this because I believe these communities often miss out on the services they truly deserve. I’m particularly committed to offering sliding scale fees, as I know financial barriers can prevent many people from getting the help they need.
GovState Newsroom: What advice would you give to current and/or future GovState students?
Liliana: During difficult times, it’s crucial to reach out to friends and chosen family. School can feel isolating, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Remember, the academic journey may be long and challenging, but the rewards at the end are truly worthwhile. Earning your degree will equip you with the skills to support those who have been marginalized and in need during their toughest moments. You’re not alone in this journey, and your efforts will make a meaningful difference.
GovState Newsroom: How are you celebrating your graduation?
Liliana: I'm excited to spend some quality time with friends I haven't seen in ages and grab dinner together! I'm thinking about doing a fun photoshoot to celebrate this wonderful time in my life. I really believe that a picture is worth a thousand words, and these snapshots will help me look back with a smile and inspire me as I continue my journey toward my doctorate. Can't wait to make some memories!
