Khadijah Bradford: Following her passion for counseling

With 17 years of experience in public school education, Khadijah Bradford returned to Governors State University (GovState) for her doctorate degree, dreaming of teaching at the university level. Following her master’s degree in counseling, she decided to pursue a Doctor of Education in Counselor Education and Supervision.
Khadijah hopes to share her love for the counseling field with others, guiding new counselors on their career paths. For the moment, she’s looking forward to celebrating her graduation with her family and friends.
GovState Newsroom: What attracted you to GovState?
Khadijah: I was drawn to Governors State because of its close proximity to my home and communities that I currently serve. As a life-long resident of the South Suburbs of Chicago, it was important to me to attend an institution that was close to home and committed to supporting the surrounding communities. Governors State also offered the degree I was most interested in, an Ed.D in Counselor Education and Supervision. I was attracted to the course offerings, as well as the faculty and staff in the program.
GovState Newsroom: What’s your degree and why did you choose it?
Khadijah: I earned my Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Counselor Education and Supervision to further enhance my counseling expertise and to pursue my goal of teaching at the university level. After completing my master's in counseling with a school counseling endorsement from Governors State in 2016, I was determined to return to academia to pursue a doctoral degree and contribute to the field of counseling education.
GovState Newsroom: What clubs and/or activities were you involved with? Any memories stick out with one of them?
Khadijah: I have been active with Chi Sigma Iota which is the international honor society for counselors. My most memorable moment with Chi Sigma is being inducted into the organization.
GovState Newsroom: What are your dreams for your degree?
Khadijah: With my degree, I look forward to teaching and guiding new counselors into the profession. I love what I do and who I do it for. I completely enjoy teaching and pouring into the professional development of future counselors.
GovState Newsroom: What project or passions are you excited to explore post-graduation?
Khadijah: I am excited to begin working as a full-time faculty member in a counselor education program. I am a public school educator with 17 years of experience and I have worked with students ages 3 all the way through college. I have a passion for teaching and motivating my students toward paths that excite them.
GovState Newsroom: How are you celebrating your graduation?
Khadijah: I am celebrating graduation by having a huge party with my family, friends, and colleagues. They have truly been my support throughout this entire process. I could not have done this without them. My son will also be graduating this year from elementary school, so we are celebrating the entire month of May.
