Justice Corner series launches with Vince Jones
Governors State's Social Justice Initiative hosts Oct. 16 event
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(University Park, Ill.) – Governors State University's (GovState) Social Justice Initiative (SJI) is launching a Justice Corner Series, a discussion space featuring scholar activists that are advocating for social justice in America and around the world.
WHO: Vincent R. Jones, Associate Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the author of “The Problem with Capital Punishment and Why It Should Be Abolished in America”
WHAT: Justice Corner Series
WHEN: 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2024
WHERE: Social Justice Building on Governors State University campus
WHY: The Justice Corner Series is a discussion space that introduces the GovState community to the minds of scholar activists who are champions for social justice in America and throughout the world. This series welcomes all who care about humanity and highlights the exceptional professors, staff, students, alumni, and friends who envision liberation, safety, and justice for all.
The first guest, Dr. Vincent Jones, is a professor and author. His book, “The Problem with Capital Punishment and Why It Should Be Abolished in America," takes a harsh, critical look at the theories that support the use of capital punishment and exposes the truth about this punishment, from its errors to its expenses.
Jones has said that social justice is a part of who he is, going back to his days training for the Olympics to his current work in academia.
“I think that I have a natural inclination to want to see justice and fairness, going back to being an athlete and wanting sports to be fair all the way into my academia where I decided I wanted to be a lawyer and defend people that were being mistreated,” said Jones in a recent interview for GovState's weekly news show, This Week at GovState (TWAG).
