Juneteenth 2024: Celebrating the end of slavery in the U.S.
As we approach Juneteenth, a day that holds profound significance in American history, we pause to reflect on its importance and honor its legacy. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It marks the moment when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the farthest corners of the Confederacy, liberating those who had been unjustly held in bondage.
This year, as we celebrate Juneteenth, it is essential that we recognize both its historical significance and its relevance to our present moment. While Juneteenth symbolizes the end of slavery in the United States, it also reminds us of the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality. As members of Governors State University, we must continue to confront the legacies of systemic racism and work towards creating a more just and inclusive society.
In observance of Juneteenth, Governors State University will be closed on Wednesday, June 19. This day provides a unique opportunity for our community to reflect, educate, and engage in meaningful dialogue about the importance of this day. We encourage faculty and staff to take this opportunity to actively participate in Juneteenth events, both within our university and in the broader community. Let us use this day to honor the resilience and strength of those who fought for freedom and to recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of building a more equitable future.
As we strive to uphold our university’s values of diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and belonging, let us also remember that our commitment to justice extends far beyond a single day of observance. It is a continuous effort that requires sustained commitment, effort, compassion, and solidarity. Together, we can continue to make meaningful progress towards a more just and equitable world, not just on Juneteenth, but every day.
Thank you for your dedication to our GovState community, and for your commitment to advancing social justice both within and beyond our campus walls.
