Jaguars you should know: Academic Advisor Sommer Lee

As an Academic Advisor, Sommer Lee understands the crucial role she plays in the lives of Governors State University (GovState) students. She gained that empathy from personal experience.
“I want to be the support system that I wish I had during my own educational journey,” Lee said. “This role allows me to directly impact students' paths by offering guidance, encouragement, and resources. But what I enjoy most is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with students.”
Lee advises students majoring in Computer Science, Information Technology and History. A typical day involves reviewing students’ academic plans and developing personalized strategies. Lee is committed to empowering students at all levels, guiding them from start to finish in their academic journey. Her enthusiasm and dedication make a meaningful impact on the students she serves.
“Each day is filled with diverse challenges, making my work both engaging and rewarding,” she said. “I address questions, assist in locating resources, manage urgent issues, monitor students’ progress, and collaborate with faculty to promote student success.”
Lee joined the Undergraduate Advising Center in October 2024. She graduated from Northern Illinois University in 2016 with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies and began work at GovState in 2017 for the Family Development Center as a substitute.
“GovState has allowed me to transition into roles where I could have a more direct impact on student success,” Lee explained. She first worked in the Family Development Center, “supporting families and understanding the diverse needs of students.” Then as a Program Coordinator for the Illinois Tutoring Initiative, she helped bridge the educational gaps exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Her role as an Academic Advisor was the next logical step in her career path, Lee said, as she feels a strong desire to help students succeed. “The satisfaction of seeing students achieve their goals—and knowing that I played a part in their success—is incredibly rewarding.”
