The Center for Performing Arts (CPA) at Governors State University (GovState) recently welcomed Executive Director Scott Sowinski, who took the position in May, setting the scene for a cultural season of transition and possibilities.

Sowinski took the helm following Lana Rogachevskaya's departure after 11 cultural seasons of building a legacy of creating compassionate communities and curating artistic experiences that inspire the art-lover in all.

Sowinski said he is eager to, “Build upon the foundation well developed by Lana and further cement a culture of arts that is essential and exponentially enhancing to the lives of our GovState family and our greater community.”

The CPA annually serves over 50,000 residents from the Cook, Will, and Kankakee counties in Northeast Illinois and Lake County Northwest Indiana. With Sowinski’s leadership GovState can continue to support the CPA’s vision of bringing together diverse artists and audiences to create experiences and memories that activate compassion and transform the world.

Sowinski is no stranger to GovState a native of the Southland of Chicago he grew up attending shows at the CPA.

Of all the things I might bring, the most important goal to my journey is to ignite in others the same spark I found at the Center long ago. It informed my artistic journey. I hope our work will do the same for many generations to come,” he said.

The CPA's 28th cultural 2023-24 season promises a kaleidoscopic fusion of music, dance, comedy and theatre.

"This season [is] a hand-picked recipe for ‘whole’ art exposure. From opera to Prince, New Age Quartets, light shows, compelling comedy, Jazz, world dance, and our partners in university programming, I am most excited to place art at the center of the lives of our community. Our 23-24 season offers enormous diversity giving us all the opportunity to grow and evolve through art in all forms!” said Sowinski.
