How to Celebrate Veterans Day
Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States that is observed on Nov. 11, honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces. Our holiday also coincides with Armistice Day (national holiday for many Allied Nations), and Remembrance Day (Commonwealth of Nations), which celebrates the end of World War I.
From marines, sailors, airmen, coast guardsman, guardians and soldiers, it is important to honor all veterans on this day. There are roughly 20 million veterans in the United States and Governors State University (GSU) is proud to have a large contingent serving in roles as faculty, staff and students.
Here are a few ways you can support Veterans Day and acknowledge those who have served our country:
Show your appreciation: Saying “thank you” is always appreciated. It can carry a lot of weight to a service member on Veterans Day.
Get involved in the Community: Veterans Day is a great opportunity to become involved in the community. You can find multiple opportunities, such as a local Veterans hospital or helping out at a veterans shelter.
Connect with a fellow Veteran: It is a great opportunity for fellow veterans to connect and enjoy the camaraderie with someone who has a common background.
My ask of all GSU employees is to take a minute on November 11 and think about the sacrifices and commitment our veterans have given to this country. If you know a veteran, make it a point to reach out, trust me, it means more than you know!
