Jaguars are gearing up to “Paint the Town Orange” for Governors State University’s (GovState) Homecoming 2023, a weeklong tradition full of fun including friendly competitions, a 5k run, music and more.

This tradition brings students, faculty, staff and alumni together through events and activities designed to create a sense of cohesiveness. Along with events, there are spirit days to bring out the Jaguar pride in everyone.

Starting on Oct. 28, community members can enjoy a celebration of gospel at the Homecoming concert, while the following day boasts the fourth annual 5K Walk, Run, Roll, where participants follow a route through the university campus.

Spirit days kick off on Monday, Oct. 30 with an orange explosion. As Jaguars rock their best orange attire, they can paint the university’s rock and windows with Homecoming messages or join the club wars, a three-day competition that highlights recognized GovState student clubs and organizations.

Jaguars can wear their favorite costume on Tuesday, Oct. 31 while they watch the Junior Jaguar Parade of Family Development Center students showing their Jaguar spirit at 10 a.m. Later, GovState staff will face off against students in a friendly basketball game at 5:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, Nov. 1, Jaguars can get wacky by mixing and matching their clothes. At noon, Jaguars can participate in the Día de Muertos Celebration that honors life and death, and culture and traditions.

Thursday, Nov. 2 is GovState spirit day as Jaguars are encouraged to represent the university by wearing GovState gear and colors. Radio Jaguar launches at 12:30 p.m. followed by a Homecoming pep rally at 1 p.m. with a marching band, live performances and GovState’s athletic teams. At 7 p.m., GovState’s women’s volleyball team faces Trinity Christian.

Rounding off spirit week is Flashback Friday, where everyone is encouraged to wear clothes from decades past. Jaguars can showcase their talent on the mic in the Orange Expressions Open Mic event at 5 p.m.

Homecoming week festivities wrap up on Saturday, Nov. 4 with a Tailgate Day Party to cheer on the men’s and women’s basketball teams, who both have games later in the day. The night ends with the Homecoming Student Gala at 8 p.m., where students are invited to dress to impress for this upscale event.
