GSU President Writes Open Letter to Thank Joliet Junior College English Instructor

In an open letter to a Joliet Junior College English instructor, Governors State University (GSU) President Elaine P. Maimon thanks the individual who transformed the life of a GSU student leader.

Tommy Kolovos, an Anthropology and Sociology major, will share his story as one of two 2019 student commencement speakers on May 18.

During a celebration of his academic achievements earlier in the year, Kolovos told President Maimon about his experience in the JJC instructor's freshman composition class. He said the instructor molded him into a writer and critical thinker before he arrived at GSU in 2017.

Grateful to have such a well-prepared student on campus, President Maimon reached out in an open letter to thank the un-named instructor.

"Dear colleague," President Maimon writes in the letter posted in the May 2 issue of "Insider Higher Ed."

"Tommy did not remember your name. But he certainly remembered that you changed his life.''
