University Park, IL—Beginning fall 2019, new, qualified Governors State University (GSU) freshman and transfer students can reap the benefits of a generous scholarship program, funded in part by the state, that will cover between 25% to 100% of their college tuition for up to four years.
The AIM HIGH program is an initiative of the General Assembly's Higher Education Working Group, created to help four-year universities enroll and retain high achieving students by providing grants to first year and transfer students.
Support from this program will increase Governors State’s institutional grants and scholarships by more than 400%.
GSU President Elaine P. Maimon praised the bi-partisan effort to support students in the wake of a two-year budget crisis.
"I am very pleased by the state’s renewed commitment to ensure access to higher education for Illinois students. The new AIM HIGH legislation will help GSU and other public universities attract the state’s most talented students with additional scholarship money.”
President Maimon also noted the state's reforms to MAP guaranteed funds, available to low-income students for all four years of their undergraduate education. Under the new guidelines, returning MAP recipients will be guaranteed grants if they meet a FAFSA priority deadline and eligibility requirements.
First-time GSU freshmen who have earned a 2.75 GPA and 19 ACT composite or 980 SAT or better will be guaranteed merit scholarships that range from $3,000 - $6,000 per year based on unweighted high school GPA. Awards are renewable each year.
For freshmen with GPAs of 3.75 and higher who meet all university and AIM HIGH criteria, this could mean 50% off annual tuition.
There are also three competitive scholarships available to freshmen—the GSU Presidential Scholarship, the Provost’s Scholarship, and the Dean’s Scholarship—which can be combined with the AIM HIGH award.
First time freshmen with GPAs of 3.75 and higher who win one of the three competitive scholarships, and meet all university and AIM HIGH criteria, will earn free annual tuition.
To receive AIM HIGH at GSU funds, the university requires all first-year students to participate in a high-impact guided pathway, such as tracks in the Health and Life Sciences, a 4 + 1 MBA, Honors Program, or participation in the Civic Engagement Learning Community.
For transfer students, more than $200,000 in guaranteed scholarships is available based on cumulative GPA from the community college that awards their associate's degree. Qualified transfer students can earn up to $4,000 annually with a GPA of 3.75, or higher, while students with 3.25 GPA would qualify for up to $2,000 annually.
In addition, transfer students who participate with the GSU Male Success Initiative program qualify for a $1,000 grant, and transfer students enrolled in GSU’s nationally recognized Dual Degree Program are eligible for competitive scholarships based on merit and talent.
Transfer student scholarships include DDP Honors, Star Scholars, and DDP Promise. More information on financial aid and FAFSA is available at AIM HIGH at GSU. Use application waiver code AIMHIGH19 when applying.
