Governors State University Board Approves Tuition Freeze

University Park, IL. – Students enrolling at Governors State University can count on tuition staying the same next year following a unanimous vote by its trustees for no tuition increase. The board’s decision at its March 2 meeting to hold tuition flat keeps a college degree from Governors State among the most affordable of any four-year state university in Illinois. Undergraduate tuition rates for Illinois residents during the 2018-19 academic year will remain $313 per credit hour.

Affordability and access to financial aid for GSU students is essential. Nearly 60 percent of GSU’s freshman class received financial assistance from the Monetary Award Program (MAP) during the 2017-18 academic year. Students at Governors State are also supported through a wide variety of scholarship and student employment opportunities.

GSU President Elaine P. Maimon said she is pleased with the Board of Trustees’ decision. “Illinois students are the future leaders of this state and they deserve a high-quality education that will prepare them for 21st century careers. We will do all we can to make a college education possible for students at GSU.”

2018 is an historic year for year for Governors State. Last month, after just two years in the National Athletic Intercollegiate Association’s Chicagoland Conference, GSU’s men’s basketball team won the league and tournament championship and next week they compete for the national conference title in South Dakota. Saturday, May 19, GSU will graduate students from its first freshman class at the Tinley Park Convention Center. Next year, GSU celebrates its 50th anniversary.
