Grammy-Winning hip-hop pioneers Arrested Development come to Governors State University November 7

The Center for Performing Arts (The Center) at Governors State University (GovState) welcomes Grammy Award-winning hip-hop pioneers Arrested Development on Saturday, November 7, 2026 at 7:30 p.m.
True hip-hop trailblazers since 1991, Arrested Development has spent more than three decades challenging expectations of what hip-hop can sound like, look like and say. Known for blending hip-hop with African musical and visual influences, the group has built a legacy around consciousness, empowerment, self-reflection and community.
Their breakthrough album, “3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of…,” earned Arrested Development two Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “Tennessee.” The group has also received MTV, Soul Train and NAACP Image Award recognition, and Rolling Stone named Arrested Development Band of the Year in 1992. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame later recognized “Tennessee” among the songs that helped shape rock and roll.
Songs including “Tennessee,” “People Everyday” and “Mr. Wendal” helped establish Arrested Development as one of the defining voices of socially conscious hip-hop. Throughout its career, the group has used music to engage with issues of identity, culture, homelessness, social justice and community empowerment, while supporting organizations and movements including the National Coalition for the Homeless and the African National Congress.
More than 30 years after their breakthrough, Arrested Development continues to create new music rooted in reflection, storytelling and social awareness. Their 2024 double album, Bullets in the Chamber, featured collaborations with artists including Chuck D, Canibus, Diana King, Ras Kass, Grandmaster Caz, Sol Messiah and Sa-Roc.
The group’s newest project, Adult Contemporary Hip-Hop, continues that forward momentum. Executive produced by Speech for Vagabond Productions and Configa for Configaration Records, the project includes the singles “All I See Is Melanin” and “Pack It Out,” blending lyrical storytelling, soul and socially conscious perspective.
Beyond the Concert: Lyric-Writing Workshop with Speech Thomas
Arrested Development’s visit to Governors State University will extend beyond the stage with a lyric-writing workshop led by founding member Speech Thomas.
The workshop will invite participants to explore the power of words, storytelling and creative expression through hip-hop while learning directly from an artist whose career has demonstrated how songwriting can connect personal experience with larger conversations about identity, culture, community and social change.
The workshop is part of The Center’s broader effort to create meaningful connections between visiting artists, students and the community through educational and engagement opportunities that complement live performance through their SPARK Series.
In advance of the performance, Governors State University faculty, staff and students are also being invited to participate in a campus fan interview campaign exploring Arrested Development’s impact on music, culture and social consciousness. Members of the GovState community can share when they first discovered the group, what its music has meant to them and how particular songs have connected with their lives and experiences.
The November engagement offers both longtime fans and a new generation of listeners the chance to experience a group that continues to demonstrate hip-hop’s power as music, storytelling and cultural expression.
