GovState’s College of Health and Human Services celebrates Stroke Awareness Campaign
An interprofessional approach to prevention and care

Following its recent presentation of its Stroke Awareness Campaign, Governors State University’s (GovState) College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) is celebrating the power of interdisciplinary teamwork and its potential to improve public health.
The campaign was launched in collaboration with the Bremen Township Wellness Center in an effort to enhance public health knowledge and promote community well-being. The event featured educational sessions led by students as part of the University’s Interprofessional Education and Collaboration (IPEC) project.
Students distributed stroke awareness materials, facilitated discussions, and answered questions, gaining valuable professional experience while making a meaningful impact on the community.
“We were thrilled to offer our students such a dynamic learning experience,” said Dr. Somi Nagaraj, GovState Professor and the Principal Investigator of the IPEC project. “By collaborating across disciplines, our students not only gained invaluable hands-on experience but also contributed to the well-being of the surrounding community.”
Upon completion of the project, students received certificates of participation, and the experience enhanced their understanding of inter-professional education and collaboration, better preparing them to serve diverse communities in the future. The campaign significantly raised awareness about stroke prevention and treatment.
The initiative received enthusiastic support and positive feedback from the community, with residents expressing gratitude for the University’s commitment to offering free educational resources on an important health issue.
