GovState to host events to build community among veterans
(University Park, IL) – From laid-back chats to friendly competition, Governors State University’s (GovState) School of Extended Learning (SXL) is offering a variety of activities to bring veterans together and build a support network.
The following events are held on GovState’s campus in partnership with AmeriCorps Vista:
Merging Vets and Players (MVP): MVP empowers veterans and athletes to thrive beyond their uniforms through fitness, health, and wellness programs. Connect, train, and unify through sports! The next session is July 14 from 6 – 8 p.m. in the GovState gymnasium.
Veterans Coffee and Chat: Get together for coffee, conversation, and an activity in the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) at GovState every first and third Wednesday of the month from noon to 2 p.m. All veterans are welcome to join to connect, share experiences, and build camaraderie.
Veterans “Speak About it” Saturdays: Looking to vent? Facing a dilemma that needs resolving? Every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon in the VRC, there’s a weekly open forum where veterans can engage in informal discussions with fellow veterans. Hosted by Licensed Therapist Vanna Ramadani, a survivor of war crimes, this gathering provides a chance to express concerns in a safe space and form new friendships.
GovState’s Veterans Yoga: Veterans can expect fun and relaxation with Yoga Night on June 26 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. in the VRC. Sponsored by GovState's School of Extended Learning.
VA Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership (VITAL): This program offers support and resources for student veterans in monthly Tuesday meetings in the VRC Lounge at GovState. VA representatives will be available to offer assistance and guidance.
More events are coming up in the fall, including an Olympics Day and Resource Fair.
