GovState to celebrate birthday on July 17
Looking forward to Governors State University’s (GovState) 55th birthday on July 17, Board of Trustees Chair Angela Sebastian recently reflected on the university where she earned a B.S. in Accounting in 1996.
“Governors State is just 55 years old. In institutional years, it's in its adolescence. Unlike humans, who reach 55 and may feel like we're in the autumn season of our lives, Governors State is very very young. We have so much energy and potential - we're still chasing dreams of what is possible.”
Sebastian said her own untapped potential prompted her to return to college as a non-traditional student after working for a few years after high school. She said hers was a transactional relationship at the time with the University, then a two-year upper division institution.
“My degree was something I needed to earn in a cost-effective and efficient way. It was a means to an end. Today, I see GovState looking to establish relationships and connect with the community,’’ Sebastian said.
Will Davis, Vice President of External Affairs, said community is at the center of the upcoming birthday celebration.
“The University's recently adopted motto - “We Are GovState,” exudes unity, togetherness, and belonging, not only for students, but for the region collectively being a stakeholder in Governors State University,” he said.
Also new this year include GovState's first social Greek letter organization on campus, an Honors College and Graduate College, as well as a Hispanic Student Resource Center.
“This is a year of firsts,’’ Davis said.
The free celebration will be co-hosted with Village of Park Forest and feature an outdoor concert and family-friendly attractions.
Guest are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket and enjoy live entertainment from the Village Green. Seating is first come, first serve. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
