GovState, Southland Care Coordination Partners announce Jennifer Artis Scholarship

(University Park, Ill.) – Governors State University (GovState) announces the Jennifer Artis Scholarship, named in honor of Jennifer Artis, a champion for equitable healthcare and accessibility to quality healthcare education. She lived her life devoted to addressing health disparities, community health development and advocacy, and bringing quality healthcare to economically disadvantaged communities in Chicago’s south suburbs.

This scholarship, intended for students taking on a program of study in nursing, social work, health administration and/or community health, was made possible by a generous $25,000 donation from the Southland Care Coordination Partners (SCCP). Artis, who was Chief Executive Officer of SCCP, founded the organization behind a mission and vision to co-create healthy communities that incorporate physical, mental, social, and economic well-being. 

Artis had a long-standing relationship with the College of Health and Human Services (then the College of Health Professions) at GovState. She served for many years on the College’s Advisory Board under Dean Linda Samson. She was also a dedicated member of the Governors State University Foundation Board, as well as the 5th District Commissioner of Cook County, a member of the Cook County Commission on Women’s Issues, and a Trustee for the Village of Richton Park, among many other accolades.

“Jennifer Artis’ strong commitment to health equity in the Chicago Southlands, and her dedicated mentorship of others, has left a powerful legacy. Now with this scholarship, that legacy translates into meaningful resources for students at GovState,” said Dr. Catherine Balthazar, Dean of the College of Health and Human Services. “I am so grateful for the thoughtful selection of GovState as steward for SCCP’s generous gift in her name. We will make good use of it, keeping her legacy at the forefront of our efforts.”
