GovState shows Pride with McKethen scholarship
Ruben Lopez, Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology student, is eager to share his excitement as the most recent recipient of Governors State University’s (GovState) Jackie McKethen Scholarship for LGBTQ+ students.
“It feels nice. It is nice to know that the scholarship is an option that’s available for all program levels," said Ruben, who works as Manager of the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago's Laura Parks and Mildred Francis Center as he completes his master's degree.
Celebrated every June, Pride is about showing self-love, dignity, happiness, confidence, and self-worth. GovState recognizes Pride is not just a month for those in the LGBTQ+ community but an emotion and an action. One of the ways the University supports the community is through the Jackie McKethen Scholarship for LGBTQ+ Students.
McKethen, a longtime supporter of GovState and local transgender community activist, directly funds the scholarship each year to support students who are part of the LGBTQ+ community or those who have shown significant support for the cause. Students spend the money to help ease their financial situation in college.
“We’ve been able to provide $500 for books and expenses to several students,” McKethen said. “One recipient wrote me a thank you letter that I have framed on my wall.”
Ruben is gratetful for GovState’s efforts. He praised the supportive faculty and staff. He shared that his academic journey has helped develop him professionally.
“A lot of our instructors are open about their own identities. In my role at YWCA, I commonly work with queer folks that need resources that are specific to understanding our struggles and being sensitive to our experiences.”
He shared advice for LGBTQ+ people who are considering applying for scholarships:
“Continue to be fearless and bold.”
