GovState celebrates 2024 Dual Degree Program graduates

On the stage of the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University (GovState), Luis Martinez told family, guests and friends that he was honored to be part of the Dual Degree Program (DDP).
“Our journey through college has been unique sharing two institutions," said Luis, a GovState class of 2024 student representative from DDP. The program is a partnership between GovState and 17 regional community colleges which allows students to work alongside a transfer specialist providing a seamless path to earn two degrees.
Luis joined by 59 other DDP graduates, as well as GovState leadership and representatives from DDP’s partner colleges for one of many events leading up to Commencement.
With nearly 1,200 students having graduated from the program, this year, 60 students are set to walk the stage on Saturday; 12 of them having previously received full-ride scholarships to GovState and four achieving cum laude and above receiving university honors.
The stage was illuminated with not only family members but GovState faculty and staff including President Cheryl Green, Provost Beverly Schneller, and Jessica Specht Director of DDP. The ceremony celebrated 2024 DDP graduates, who started their academic journey at a local community college and then transferred to GovState after earning their associate degree.
The black and white cords that the graduates received represent the original colors of GovState and the colors braided represent those of the community college. Recipients will wear these cords on Saturday, May 18 during the official Commencement ceremony.
Dr. Green talked about the meaning of the cords. "Today, I will place your cords on your shoulders. These black and white cords and intertwined with the colors of your community college symbolize the shared bond and support of student success.”
Provost Schneller said she was excited by the graduates’ decisions that led them to GovState. 
“We know you have choices and you have made the right choice,” said Dr. Schneller. “We see your value and how you contribute to society. You brought the culture of your college here and you’ve made us better.”
As cheers from parents and loved ones filled the auditorium, the graduates were glowing from the stage lights and their aura of pride, Specht beamed with pride.
“Today we celebrate the journey of a special group of students. The last few years have tested your perseverance and your resilience but here you are. You are GovState, and you are graduates.”
