GovState and UCenter partner to make degree completion more accessible

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill., October 14, 2025 – Governors State University (GovState) announces new academic partnership with the University Center of Lake County (UCenter). As its 14th member institution, GovState will bring even more educational opportunities to Lake County. Through this partnership, GovState’s Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (IDSS) will be offered locally in Lake County and online, making degree completion more accessible than ever.

“We’re proud to offer a degree program that meets students where they are academically, professionally, personally, and now physically in Lake County; one that helps students finish a degree without starting over and move forward with confidence toward their next chapter,” said Dr. Jason Zingsheim, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at GovState.

Importantly, the program recognizes prior learning, meaning students can earn credit through CLEP exams, military training, portfolio review, or other competency assessments — saving time and cost. Up to 80 hours of lower-division credit and 10 hours of upper-division credit can transfer.

“This partnership makes it possible for working adults in Lake County to complete a bachelor’s degree that recognizes the knowledge they’ve already gained and supports the lives they’re leading now,” said Dean Zingsheim.

At its core, the Interdisciplinary Studies program is designed for curious learners who want to cross boundaries in education rather than stay within one box. Students can integrate multiple fields of study, apply knowledge from different areas, and tailor a degree that fits their passions and career goals.

“At Governors State, we understand that no one’s life follows a standardized path — and their education shouldn’t either. The Interdisciplinary Studies program gives adult learners the flexibility to design a degree that fits their experiences, interests, and goals,” said Dean Zingsheim.

The program is also designed to accommodate various student needs and emphasizes real-world preparation by promoting career exploration and internship opportunities.

Students will be able to complete the degree entirely online or take advantage of in-person support at University Center’s Grayslake campus. Whether they are working adults, transfer students, or those balancing life with learning, this suite of options is designed to meet them where they are.
