FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(University Park, Ill.) After serving in the role for more than a year, Governors State University (GSU) President Dr. Cheryl Green will be invested as the sixth President of Governors State University on Friday, Sept. 17, 2021.

The investiture ceremony’s guest list will include local and state dignitaries, as well as special guests from institutions of higher learning, including John Atkinson, chair of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, and Dr. Andrew Leavitt, chancellor of Uiniversity of  Wisconsin - Oshkosh, where Green served as vice chancellor for Student Affairs, and previously served as Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at Tennessee State University.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker submitted a congratulatory video for the investiture, a tradition in higher education to officially welcome new presidents to the community. Though the ceremony usually takes place in the incoming president’s first year, COVID forced the delay of Dr. Green’s welcome.

Still, she says she has much to celebrate since assuming office on July 1, 2020, and points to a strong collaboration between GSU faculty, staff, leadership and supporters to meet the needs of students during a global pandemic that abruptly forced classes off campus in the weeks before she took office.

The event will be held on campus, followed by a reception and a formal gala at the Tinley Park Convention Center.
