Governors State University updates Master of Public Administration Program

(University Park, Illinois) - Governors State University (GovState) is updating its Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, bringing a trimmed course load so students can earn their degree sooner. 

Effective with the 2026-2027 academic year, the MPA program has been streamlined from 39 credit hours to 36, providing students with a more efficient pathway to earning their graduate degree while maintaining the rigorous preparation and practical learning opportunities that define the program.

GovState's MPA program combines a strong foundation in public administration with applied learning that prepares graduates for leadership roles across government, nonprofit organizations, and other public service settings.

What's changed? Fewer credit hours, same quality education

Designed with working professionals in mind, the updated program offers greater flexibility for MPA students balancing careers, family responsibilities, and studying whether they're advancing within their current profession or preparing for a new leadership role.

A master's degree in public administration prepares professionals with the knowledge, analytical skills, and practical leadership capabilities needed to address complex public challenges and make a meaningful impact in their communities.

While there are fewer credit hours, students can still expect:

• Building essential skills in: Public administration, policy analysis, budgeting and financial management, program evaluation, strategic management, and ethical decision-making. The program emphasizes practical application, critical thinking, and problem solving, enabling students to connect academic knowledge with real-world challenges facing public and nonprofit organizations.
• Applying classroom learning to real-world challenges in their practical capstone: The MPA program collaborates with the Village of Bradley and the Youth Education Development Academy for capstones.
• Experiential learning: Students have opportunities to collaborate with local governments, nonprofit organizations, and community partners to solve real organizational challenges through research and practical projects.
• Professional development: Career, networking, mentoring, and experiential learning initiatives connect current students with accomplished MPA alumni, public service professionals, mentors, and community leaders while gaining valuable insights into diverse pathways in public administration.

Graduates of GovState's MPA program have gone on to serve in various roles in different sectors including the Cook County Government, Office of the Illinois State Treasurer, and Deloitte's Engagement Financial Advisory.
