FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(University Park, Ill.)- Governors State University (GovState) recently learned that the US Department of Education is expecting additional delays in processing and sending information from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to all universities. The adjusted expected time to process a FAFSA will be about six weeks. This also affects the timing for the university's software vendors, who help transmit the information on the FAFSA into the university's financial aid offers for students.

Because of this delay from the Department of Education, Governors State University will extend the Enrollment Deposit Date to June 1, 2024, for new first-year (Freshman) Students.

Do Not Wait to complete the FAFSA. It will only further delay your estimated award packages. All students regardless of income may qualify for Federal Direct Loans. In order to determine loan amount and eligibility, students must complete the Federal Financial Aid form (Form). NOTE: GovState has rolling admissions for undergraduate programs and will continue to admit students beyond June 1.

GovState also encourages undocumented students who are not otherwise eligible for Federal Financial Aid to complete the Illinois Alternative Application. The Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid allows qualifying undocumented students who are not otherwise eligible for federal financial aid to apply for Illinois Monetary Award Program (MAP) grants to attend eligible Illinois colleges, universities, and career education programs. Visit the Illinois Student Assistance Commission website to complete the application. The Illinois Alternative Application is open!

The Office of Financial Aid's website will be regularly updated, and will continue to communicate any changes to policy and about any updates in timing. Should there be additional delays from the Department of Education, GovState will let you know how that might affect your aid.

We also encourage you to attend one of GovState's free FAFSA Completion Workshops hosted by the Office of Financial Aid for assistance in completing the FAFSA or Alternative Application. All workshop participants will be entered into a drawing for a GSU Bookstore Gift Card! Click here for more information and workshop dates.

We at GovState are doing everything we can to help students navigate through these changes. We strongly encourage students NOT to delay their matriculation for Fall 2024, even with the delays at the Department of Education. We are standing by ready to assist students, parents, and the community we serve.
