Governors State University cuts ribbon on historic soccer complex
Awards championship men’s team jackets and rings
In a mock ribbon cutting for a historic soccer field, Governors State University (GovState) leaders called the FIFA-approved turf a dream come true.
“I had the privilege of being in the room while the athletic program was being thought out and planned,’’ said Will Davis, V.P. of External Affairs. “Today, I see this as no longer a promise deferred but a downpayment on what the future holds.”
The GovState Soccer Complex, in its first phase, will replace barren, dry ground with a state-of-the-art playing surface approved by Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), creating a historic and special place for athletes to train and compete.
Previously, GovState soccer players practiced and hosted games off campus in Crown Point, Indiana. Ultimately, the complex will include covered benches, stands, restrooms, locker rooms, and seating for 400 fans.
Despite the daily travel 30 miles to Indiana to practice and play, the Jaguars have been victorious since they started playing in 2019. The men’s team has made an appearance every year at the CCAC postseason playoffs, three times in the NAIA National Tournament, and in 2024, they were the CCAC conference regular season and postseason tournament champions.
“Great success under horrible conditions,’’ said GovState Board Chair Jim Kvedaras, who was joined by other dignitaries including elected officials. The ceremony, originally planned for outdoors, was held inside because of inclement weather.
Athletic Director Tony Bates said “No home, on the road, winning championships. Nothing better.” John Potempa, AVP of Facilities, said this is a milestone. “Now, we have a field right here on campus to train, compete and build pride.”
The ribbon cutting was followed by a presentation of jackets and championship rings to the 2024-25 men’s team.
