Governors State University celebrates freshman enrollment increases, retention
2025 census report released
(University Park, Illinois) On the 10th day of the fall semester (census date), Governors State University (GovState) reported a 1.7 percent increase in undergraduate enrollment which was bolstered by a 21 percent increase in freshman enrollment. The freshman class increase represents the second largest since GovState became a four-year institution in 2014.
Additionally, graduate student enrollment decreased by 5 percent, resulting in a total enrollment decrease of 1 percent. Meanwhile, the University reported a 61 percent retention rate among freshmen entering sophomore year, serving as a strong indicator for future enrollment projections.
Despite a slight dip in overall student enrollment – 4,399 to 4,349 – University leaders are celebrating the gains in an environment that has been difficult as institutions of higher education have seen dwindling funding and enrollment.
President Joyce C. Ester has been in office since July and is excited about the trend in retention and growth of the freshman class.

Governors State leaders say the freshman enrollment increase is related to a number of factors, including a renewed commitment of students to learn local, the growing prominence of GovState, as well as a newly established Honors College and more athletic offerings. In its inaugural year, the Honors College enrolled a record-breaking freshman cohort, and the University now boasts 16 sports.
