Governors State to showcase new soccer complex April 24
Ribbon cutting set to honor men’s championship team
University Park, Illinois) – Just weeks before the soccer complex ribbon cutting at Governors State University (GovState), the Athletics Department welcomes Jose “Tony” Gonzalez as the new Head men's Soccer Coach.
Before coming to GovState, Gonzalez was the head soccer coach for the men's and women's teams at South Suburban College (SSC). There, he worked with the men's team for 25 seasons and the women's team for nine years. During Gonzalez’s time at SSC, the women's team played in five consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region IV finals, from 2021 to 2026, as well as competed in NJCAA championships. On Friday, April 24, Gonzalez will join Governors State officials to cut the ribbon at a new soccer complex near the Prairie Place residence hall. The event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. to showcase the new field and to honor the University's Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) championship men's soccer team with a special ring ceremony. In addition to the ring ceremony, there will be a presentation of varsity jackets to the soccer team, and a soccer skills contest.
Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community friends are invited. The event is free, though RSVP is required. Click here to RSVP.
