FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
University Park, IL – With the holidays fast approaching, Governors State’s Center for Student Engagement and Intercultural Programs (CSEIP) will be hosting a Holiday Food Box Giveaway on Nov. 24.
100 boxes are available, each containing:
- 10-12 lb. turkey (frozen)
- 1 lb. carrots
- 5 lbs. baker potatoes
- 2 medium yellow onions
- 2 bunches collard greens
- 4 sweet potatoes
Robert Clay, Executive Director of CSEIP, said his team created the event as part of the national Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, an annual program where people come together across the country to draw attention to the problems of hunger and homelessness.
With 6.4% of Will County and 13.8% of Cook County living below the poverty line and recently increased food insecurity rates due to the pandemic, the Center wanted to help by hosting the giveaway.
“With Governors State being a public square, we wanted to continue to be a resource and beacon of light that we were designed to be as we live our mission. Albeit, these times in our country have been unprecedented, we are hopeful that something as great as this holiday food box giveaway will become a lasting tradition,” said Dr. Clay.
One box per family will be available in the D building near the main entrance from 12-4 p.m. or while quantities last on a first-come, first-serve basis.
