Governors State to break ground on Social Justice center Oct. 23

(University Park, Ill.) - On Monday, Oct. 23, Governors State University (GovState) will be celebrating the groundbreaking of the Social Justice Initiative (SJI) center, a 2,700-square-foot building that will house the university's efforts to eliminate barriers to higher education.

What: Governors State University will host a groundbreaking on the site that will house the Social Justice Initiative Center.

Where: Governors State University campus near the Hantack House, 1 University Parkway, University Park, IL 60484

What else: Launched in 2021, the Social Justice Initiative is a pillar of President Cheryl F. Green’s vision for Governors State University to take its place as a regional and national leader in eradication of barriers to education, success, and equity for the Southland community. The Social Justice Initiative currently hosts a pro bono legal clinic providing informational resources on rights, policies, and laws affecting justice in Illinois. 

“The mission of the Social Justice Initiative is to transform vulnerable populations and racial and economic injustice in the Southland and beyond. Its tools are research, policy, advocacy, restorative justice, and experiential learning,” Dr.  West recently told the Daily Southtown.

The Social Justice Initiative Center, expected to open in 2024, will be a one-story building with conference space to accommodate 20 people, office space and meeting rooms.
