Governors State Responds to NBC Chicago's COVID Report

Governors State University is aware of the NBC Chicago report “Coronavirus at College: NBC 5 Investigates Finds Rising Coronavirus Rates Near Some Illinois Public Universities” on August 18, 2020. NBC did not reach out to the university for this report, and Governors State is now in talks with the network about its information source.

To be clear, the data reported by NBC does not reflect Governors State University’s COVID-19 incident rates. Rather, the report represents a wider trend across Will County.

Governors State, like other universities, is concerned about our campus and neighboring communities as the virus continues to spread. In the Southland, the university is partnering with local entities to ensure students, employees and residents have the information and resources needed to remain safe and healthy.

As Governors State University prepares to welcome students back to campus on August 31, we are committed to following the policies and procedures set forth in our comprehensive Fall Operating Plan. Additionally, all employees and students are required to take web-based training that outlines best practices to control the transmission of the COVID-19 virus. The interactive tool also reviews the university’s guidelines for returning to campus.

Following CDC and IBHE guidance, Governors State is moving forward to provide a safe environment in which to deliver a high-quality, accessible and exceptional education to students who choose to learn local.
