Feb. 7 retirement celebration for Dr. Cheryl F. Green
Odyssey Venue to host GovState event
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(University Park, Ill.) In preparation for the spring semester at Governors State University (GovState), President Cheryl Green reflected on her four-year-tenure, which will end March 1, 2025.
"As I prepare to pass the torch, I want to emphasize that the work we've begun together has to continue. A commitment to student success, to access, to community engagement. These aren't just initiatives or programs, they are the fabric of who we are as an institution,'' an emotional Green shared with faculty and staff preparing to return to classrooms.
Dr. Green had spent 30 years in education before coming to GovState in 2020, its first African American president. She took the reins at the height of the pandemic and went on to elevate the visibility of the institution, while creating historic opportunities and removing barriers to educations. Among the highlights, she:
- Established three partnerships to create pathways to a Juris Doctorate degree
- Established a free-standing Social Justice Initiative to address barriers to social mobility, equity, and justice
- Established Latinx Resource Center to support growing Latinx student population
- Secured the University’s largest private donation in history
- Created Honors College at Governors State University
- Created College of Graduate Studies
- Established the first Black Greek-lettered organization on campus with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s Upsilon Rho Chapter.
During her address to GovState faculty and staff, Dr. Green thanked them for their support. “You have made my time here meaningful beyond measure. While I may be retiring from this role. I will forever be a proud Jaguar and member of the Governors State family. The future is bright because of you, your dedication, your creativity, your compassion, and your unwavering commitment to excellence.”
