Essentials of Estate Planning Workshop planned for July 20 at Governors State University

In the Chicago Southland, Cook County taxes are among the highest in the state where a large population of property owners are Black and Latinx —two groups that have historically been unable to build generational wealth, says Governors State University’s (GovState) Dr. Phyllis West, director of the Social Justice Initiative (SJI). The SJI and Self-Help Legal Clinic are hosting a July 20 workshop to help.

“Essentials of Estate Planning” is a two-hour workshop to be held in GovState’s Engbretson Hall and led by Rev. Dr. Aaron J. McLeod, Esq. Partner, at McLeod Legal Advisors. Topics to be covered include:

Protecting Your Assets from Creditors
Allowing Family Members to Make Healthcare Decisions When You Can’t
Saving Money Preventing Probate Proceedings
Minimizing Illinois Estate Taxes
Building and Maintaining Generational Wealth

The workshop will provide attendees with a broad view of estate planning and wealth building. West says. “They can look at their own property whether they are homeowners or condo owners for example, and think what would happen to their property if something happened to them? It’s about planning and preparing family members for potential situations and gives them an opportunity to say, “What do I want to leave my children? How can I leave a legacy?”
