At Governors State University (GovState), Environmental Health and Safety plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe and healthy campus environment. The importance of environmental health and safety cannot be overstated, particularly in preventing harm caused by hazardous materials and ensuring proper emergency responses.

Hazmat Safety: Hazardous materials can be chemical or biological agents in solid, liquid, or gaseous forms. In the event of a hazardous material spill or release—whether a large spill or the emission of dangerous vapors—it is important to follow these steps:

  • Evacuate the area immediately.
  • If possible, isolate the spill or vapor release by closing doors or sealing off the affected area.
  • If the hazardous material comes into contact with your skin or eyes, proceed to the nearest safety shower or eyewash station. If these are not available, use a washroom to flush the affected area with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes, or until medical help arrives.
  • Call 911 immediately and provide relevant information, including your exact location (building wing, room number, etc.).
  • Identify the released material if possible and obtain a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) to share with emergency responders.

Laboratory Safety: If you are enrolled in a class involving laboratory work, make sure to:

  • Review the Science Lab Safety Rules and Guidelines with your professor.
  • Familiarize yourself with the location of necessary safety equipment such as personal protective equipment (PPE), decontamination areas, emergency showers, eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, spill kits, first aid kits, and the nearest exit.
