Dr. Green on Gratitude

As enlightened citizens, we bear a responsibility for one another’s well-being. As Governors State University's extended family of alumni and community members, we have adopted a commitment to “serving as an economic catalyst for the region, leading as a model of academic excellence, innovation, diversity and responsible citizenship.”
Dr. Cheryl Green

As I look forward to the upcoming holiday season, I am reminded that while our country’s leaders are navigating cultural and political changes, as well as the devastating impacts of a raging virus, we have to know that the job of healing, restoration and peace is not theirs alone.

As enlightened citizens, we bear a responsibility for one another’s well-being. As Governors State University's extended family of alumni and community members, we have adopted a commitment to “serving as an economic catalyst for the region, leading as a model of academic excellence, innovation, diversity and responsible citizenship.”

These values are outlined in our university vision statement. And if a change is going to comeif things are going to improvethe change starts with us. Each of us needs to work towards building a “more perfect union” as referenced in the Preamble to the United States Constitution. We have come far as a country in providing equal rights, but there is more work to do to provide equal protection under the law and equal opportunity for our students and fellow citizens.

I know and believe that education is an equalizer. All of you believe the same or you wouldn’t be a part of the Governors State family as engaged alumni, current students, teachers, administrators, staff and service workers. In spite of these unprecedented times that we are managing, we have to know that together we can create a brighter tomorrow through education.

As I build that brighter future for Governors State, I am thankful for the people who work alongside me. Without them, my goal of building a better, stronger university would be out of reach. I am thankful for every one of their sacrifices and their tireless effort to share with others, what was shared with them.

I am talking about people who give of themselves not only during the holiday season but every day. I am talking about you! Thank you for all that you do to serve as a beacon of hope and light to our students and to our community. You are not alone. Together we can change the trajectory of someone’s life. Together we must.

Please help us advance Governors State University’s mission to provide an exceptional and accessible education that prepares students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed in a global society. Donate to invest in your interest and to light the path to a better tomorrow for our students.
