Jeff Stevenson in conversation with artist Terry Karpowicz on his art and career

Enjoy a glass of wine among art while hearing from the artist behind one of the most colorful pieces at the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park (theNate) at Governors State University (GovState).
In the February 20 Curatorial Conversation, Jeff Stevenson, Director and Curator of theNate and Visual Arts Gallery, will be in conversation with Terry Karpowicz, the artist of Stargazing with Contrails, the towering and colorful steel sculpture located across the lake behind GovState.
“This is for the seasoned art world veterans as well as newcomers to the world of sculpture and contemporary art,” said Stevenson about the free event. “Everyone enjoys the social aspect of meeting friends old and new.”
Stevenson added that guests will also enjoy hearing from Karpowicz himself on his artwork.
“Terry Karpowicz is a pillar of the art community and has work all around Chicagoland and the world,” said Stevenson. “His artistic range includes monumental, intimate, kinetic, wood, steel, fiber, and more. Visitors will be charmed by his generosity and impressed with his artistic excellence.”
While Karpowicz lives and works in Chicago, his art reaches beyond the city having had exhibitions throughout the United States, Mexico, Europe, and the Soviet Union.
He honed his craft earning degrees from Albion College in Albion, Michigan and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, before he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study with Jim Davies, British master millwright. This experience helped Karpowicz define his personal aesthetic.
Since then, Karpowicz has received two National Endowment for the Arts awards, four grants from the Illinois Arts Council, The Newhouse Award, and numerous public and private commissions. He has had seven commissions for public sculpture from the State of Illinois and has work held in collections of the City of Chicago, Oklahoma City, and the U.S. General Services Administration.
