Colin Harling: Advancing his career

An alum of Governors State University’s (GovState) Biology program, Colin Harling (’12) returned to GovState for his master’s in Health Administration to advance in his career in healthcare. He appreciated that the University environment made him feel seen as a student and not just another number.
Colin hopes to make a difference with his work by leaving a positive impact on patients and aspires to hold an administrative position one day. Though, for now, he’s looking forward to spending more time with his family now that he’s completed his master’s degree.
GovState Newsroom: What’s your degree and why did you choose it?
Colin: I received my master’s degree in Health Administration. I chose this degree path because I have over 17 years of experience in healthcare, and it seemed to be the perfect fit for taking the next step in my professional career.
GovState Newsroom: What attracted you to GovState?
Colin: I received my undergraduate degree in Biology from GovState in 2012. During my undergraduate studies, I fell in love with the smaller, more student-centered atmosphere that the university provides. I have always appreciated the fact that the professors we interact with at GovState know the students on a personal level, and you are more than just a statistic. It just made sense to pursue my master’s degree here as well.
GovState Newsroom: What clubs and/or activities were you involved with? Any memories stick out with one of them?
Colin: I had the privilege of representing the university as the team captain for the Everett V. Fox NAHSE (National Association of Health Services Executives) Case Competition in 2021. The national competition was against some of the largest universities in the nation, and provided a rigorous, first-hand experience of a real-life case study. The experience not only brought me out of my comfort zone as a student, but provided invaluable experience that I will be able to use in my professional career. I encourage every student to take this opportunity to further their knowledge base and skillset.
GovState Newsroom: What are your dreams for your degree?
Colin: I simply want to make a difference where I can. The most important aspect of healthcare is the patient. Whether my role is quality, compliance, access, or direct patient care, I would love it if I left every patient I encountered with a positive experience. Ultimately, I would love to pursue an administrative career at one of our local, community hospitals.
GovState Newsroom: What advice would you give to current and/or future GovState students?
Colin: Develop relationships, ask questions, and step out of your comfort zone. Take advantage of the knowledgeable, caring professors that we have here at GovState and grow from the experience. One of the most important things you can have in your professional career is connections and references to assist and guide you. Create relationships early and often.
GovState Newsroom: How are you celebrating your graduation?
Colin: I am celebrating with my wife and three children by enjoying some free time now that classes are completed.
