Claudia Parker: Starting a new career following her passion

Returning to school nearly two decades after leaving her corporate career to be a stay-at-home mom, Claudia Parker is looking forward to starting a new career in digital storytelling.
Having nothing but positive experiences while attending Governors State University’s (GovState) alumni banquets played a part in Claudia Parker’s decision to attend the University in pursuit of her master’s degree in Independent Film and Digital Imaging. With that choice, she found a place that encouraged her passion and pushed her forward.
GovState Newsroom: What attracted you to GovState?
Claudia: My husband, Dr. Don Parker, is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award, having received this honor in its inaugural year. We have attended the ceremony annually to support this important initiative. I am confident that my decision to become a student at GovState was influenced by my experiences attending the Alumni banquets alongside him. The commitment GovState demonstrates in celebrating its alumni is truly commendable. Each event offers valuable opportunities for networking, positive recognition, and collegial engagement. Additionally, I have been consistently impressed by the professionalism and eloquence exhibited by each faculty member who speaks at these events. Effective communication is essential in education, and GovState is distinguished by its many outstanding orators.
GovState Newsroom: Why did you choose your degree?
Claudia: I am completing a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Independent Film and Digital Imaging. My decision to pursue this field stems from a passion for storytelling and an appreciation for multi-sensory communication. The opportunity to convey narratives through film and digital platforms remains consistently engaging and offers a stimulating experience with each new project. I’m looking forward to my upcoming art show taking place in the Visual Arts Gallery. My entire exhibition will be on display June 8 - 19, I highly recommend folks come out over the summer and check it out.
GovState Newsroom: What are your dreams for your degree?
Claudia: I have numerous goals for leveraging my MFA. My objective is to secure a position within my field that enables me to capture imagery and communicate stories across multiple platforms, including written content, photography, video, and film. Having already obtained an MBA with prior entrepreneurial experience, I am well equipped to handle the corporate and creative side of an organization.
Upon my arrival at Governors State University, I held a single short film credit. Since then, I have produced eight short films, three documentaries, and five narrative shorts, which collectively have been screened at 19 film festivals and received various accolades, including Best Director, Best Web Series, and Best Sound. Among the prominent festivals are Chicago’s Black Harvest Film Festival, Silicon Beach Film Festival, hosted at TCL Chinese Theatres on Hollywood Boulevard, and Urbanworld Film Festival, an Academy Award qualifying event in New York City.
My ideal position is as a producer for a prominent television or film network. I am motivated by dynamic, fast-paced environments in which I can contribute meaningfully to engaging projects.
GovState Newsroom: What can you get at Governors State University that you couldn't find anywhere else?
Claudia: Governors State University distinguishes itself through its affordability compared to other institutions. The university offers small class sizes that facilitate substantial faculty engagement, while still providing opportunities for peer interaction and learning from diverse areas of expertise. The campus is notable for its broad cultural representation, creating an inclusive environment where no single group predominates. Throughout my studies, I experienced a strong sense of belonging across all courses, feeling consistently supported and connected within the academic community.
GovState Newsroom: President Ester has said that GovState provides a sense of home. What makes GovState home for you?
Claudia: A home is a place where comfort, respect, and inclusion are felt. This describes my experience at Governors State University well. Since it’s my husband's alma mater, feeling like part of the GovState family comes naturally. We truly are GOVSTATE.
GovState Newsroom: What class(es) do you think students shouldn't miss taking and/or which professors should students seek out? Why?
Claudia: Professor Dan Nearing is supportive and dedicated to connecting with his students. He listens closely, offers plenty of encouragement, and helps you build on your strengths while guiding you gently in areas where you can improve. With extensive knowledge and experience in the film industry, he is an excellent mentor.
Professor Ryan Park’s classes are energetic, practical, and engaging. Students dive right into activities across all aspects of his courses. His feedback combines kindness with constructive criticism, always aiming to help you grow, and he motivates you to reach higher. Thanks to Professor Park, I have become a far better filmmaker.
Professor Beth Parin is outstanding. She adapts her teaching to each student's level, skillfully instructing both advanced learners and beginners. I've watched her manage simultaneous demands from 15 students facing different challenges, all with professionalism, patience, and humor. Her lessons are enjoyable and have made me a more skilled photographer and more confident artist.
