When designing her winning entry for the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Holiday Card Contest, Governors State University (GovState) student Messina Simona Aurora hoped it would bring some warmth in the middle of the cold weather.
“I was inspired from various graphic illustration references featuring figures in dynamic abstract backgrounds with vibrant colors,” said Simona, an Art major, of her design (pictured left). “My goal was to create a design that expresses a warm and welcoming feeling, using colors that remind me of an autumnal atmosphere, but is more energetic and colorful, somewhat counteracting the typical cold air.”
This is the second year that CAS has held their contest, a chance for students to design festive and imaginative artwork to be featured in the college’s holiday greetings. Bookstore gift cards and CAS swag bags were awarded to the top three entries.
As a student of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program, Simona chose the Graphic Design concentration, so when she heard about CAS’ contest in class, she felt it was a perfect opportunity to express her creativity beyond her studies.
“I learned about the competition through my Intro to Graphic Design professor, Paula Swisher, and I decided to put my skills into practice and contribute my art to the college,” said Simona.
Being selected as the winner of the holiday card contest is validating for Simona and she hopes her design brings others as much joy she felt creating it.
“I’m very happy that my work was chosen and I’m grateful to be able to contribute my art,” said Simona. “I hope everyone enjoys my holiday postcard.”
