Akhila Gadige: Discovering her passion in the world of cybersecurity

Intrigued by cybersecurity, Akhila Gadige decided to study Information Technology at Governors State University (GovState), where she felt the commitment to academic excellence would elevate her learning experience.
Akhila thrived in her program, participating in national and state-level competitions and helping other students in her role as a Graduate Assistant. Now, she’s anticipating crossing the Commencement stage this spring before embarking on the next part of her journey.
GovState Newsroom: What’s your degree and why did you choose it?
Akhila: I am graduating in Master of Science in Information Technology (IT). I chose this course since I have a passion for technology and its ever-changing impact on what is happening globally. Particularly, I am fascinated by cybersecurity — how to safeguard systems, information, and infrastructure from evolving cyber threats. IT offers a difficult and dynamic scenario that is in line with what I aim for in my professional life.
GovState Newsroom: What attracted you to GovState?
Akhila: Governors State University made a strong impression on me because of its commitment to excellence in allowing both academic and administrative success. The university provides exceptional computing, networking, and telecommunications services that truly enhance the learning experience. Support services like the GovState Helpdesk and Computer Connection Central were instrumental during my time at the University, allowing me to receive the assistance I needed to become an academic and technological success. Moreover, the warm atmosphere and dedication to student growth made GovState perfect for my graduate experience.
GovState Newsroom: What clubs and/or activities were you involved with?
Akhila: While at GovState, I participated actively in a number of national and state-level competitions, especially in cybersecurity and IT. I am also a member of the IT & Cybersecurity Club. Through this, I was able to apply what I had learned in class to real-world situations, hone my skills, and connect with colleagues and professionals. Additionally, being a Graduate Assistant allowed me to engage with the University community, assisting other students and collaborating on campus projects, which was very fulfilling for me.
GovState Newsroom: What are your dreams for your degree?
Akhila: My ultimate desire is to specialize in cybersecurity, where I will be able to be involved in protecting organizations from cyber-attacks and data privacy and integrity. I am passionate about creating secure virtual environments and continuous learning as the world continues to evolve and be a Cybersecurity Professional. I wish to be involved in creating safer and more secure systems and, in the long term, lead programs promoting cybersecurity awareness and innovation.
GovState Newsroom: What goal have you achieved that felt really far away your first semester at GovState?
Akhila: When I first started at GovState, the idea of being able to successfully balance academics, competitions, and a graduate assistantship in my last semester was very intimidating. But through the support of my professors and the amenities offered by the University, I was able to not only excel academically but also actively compete in national competitions and help my peers through my assistantship. Being able to finish my degree while building both academically and professionally is something I'm incredibly proud of.
GovState Newsroom: How are you celebrating your graduation?
Akhila: Passing through the graduation from GovState is a moment of utmost pride and joy for me. I am celebrating my achievement with loved ones and friends, reminiscing about the experience, and looking forward to the opportunities that the future holds. I also plan to take some time off to thank my professors and mentors, who were a constant source of guidance throughout my studies. And of course, I’m excited to start the next chapter of my career, applying what I’ve learned at GovState to real-world challenges in cybersecurity.
